Bob Myers confident about Stephen Curry’s contract extension with the Warriors

    May 26, 2021

Golden State Warriors General Manager Bob Myers is pretty optimistic about his team’s chances of holding newly crowned scoring champion Stephen Curry to a contract extension this season.

The Warriors’ season ended four days back in a play-in game against the Grizzlies but Curry was excellent as usual with his scoring form.

“I don’t see any reason not to be optimistic,” Myers said Monday.

“He seems like he’s motivated, we’re motivated. I would say pretty confident we’ll get something done.”

Curry also said in December last year that discussions about the contract extension were underway and that he was fully committed to the team. He is a two-time NBA MVP and also signed a $201 million contract for five years with the Warriors in 2017. It was the most expensive deal in the NBA at that point, until James Harden went past it with a $228 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets.

“Obviously, we want Steph back in the worst way,” coach Steve Kerr said. “There’s no reason to think why that won’t happen.”

The early exit from the season was quite a bit to digest for Curry but he is already looking forward to figuring out the things that can make the Warriors the title contenders in the upcoming seasons once again.

“Those conversations are going to pick up now, but you know, there’s a lot of uncertainty and decisions that need to go into this summer for sure. Let’s keep it real, about how we become that team again and we’ll figure those things out as we go,” Curry said.

Curry (33) became the oldest scoring champion in the NBA since Michael Jordan did it at the age of 35 in 1998. The Warriors star averaged 32 points which helped him to lead the league for the second time in his career after the 2015-16 season. Not only that, Curry also joined the elite company of Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players to have won scoring titles, MVPs and championships multiple times.
