When Derrick Rose was drafted as the No.1 pick for the Chicago Bulls in 2008, people had high hopes from the rookie. Rose surely did justice to his name and game and he exceeded expectations for the Bulls as he won the ‘Rookie of the Year’. However things did not end there as he was daunting in his first three seasons as he made All-Star appearances and in this time he also won the NBA Most Valuable Player. He became the youngest player in NBA history to win the prestigious MVP award in 2011.
But then injuries happened and he became the NBA’s biggest ‘what if’ player. He never managed to realize his potential to the fullest. Rose made All-Star appearances in his initial years in the league and he could have been one of the faces of the NBA in coming years but injuries had other ideas.
Now in his 15th season and a proven veteran Derrick Rose is more of a role player for the New York Knicks. The former Bulls man shared that he is feeling the healthiest that he has ever been heading into a new season.
In a new video released by the Knicks, Rose revealed that he is back to the weight he had during his rookie season and has not felt healthier than this for a long time. “Just grinding, head down, tunnel vision and enjoying it with the guys. Last year I… I can only say so much, do so much when you injured. So, I haven’t felt this healthy in a long time, back to my rookie weight, 195 right now. It’s been, what, 13 years since I’ve been that weight, so it’s a blessing.”
Derrick Rose is still a force even today as he has acted as a very valuable piece from the bench for the New York Knicks. He has been very important in running their offense and will surely be looking to have a better season than last time.
There are several doubts over Rose’s chances of making the Hall of Fame. While he has not played as many career games as he would have liked heading into his 15 season, having won the MVP award surely gives him an edge. But he will look to continue as a valuable piece in the coming years for whichever team he plays. He needs to elongate his career and add longevity to get that prestigious position in the NBA Hall of Fame.
