NBA Draft: First pick Anthony Edwards set for Minnesota Timberwolves

    November 20, 2020

Georgia guard Anthony Edwards has been named the NBA’s number one draft pick to move to Minnesota Timberwolves.

Anthony Edwards, James Wiseman, and LaMelo Ball were in the mix to be this year’s number one pick.

The 19-year-old Edwards then paid tribute to his late mother and grandmother, who both died of Cancer, by sitting close to the paintings of the two when the announcement was made.

“It’s an indescribable feeling – I can’t even describe it, My family is emotional. I’m sure when I get off of here I’m going to get emotional.” Edwards said.

Memphis Centre James Wiseman was selected as the number two pick by Golden State Warriors. The warriors ended last season at the end of the Western Conference.

The third pick is LaMelo Ball, and he was selected by the Charlotte Hornets. Lonzo Ball and his brother are the first brothers ever to be picked in the top five of the NBA Draft.

Lonzo was 2nd pick in the 2017 draft. The fourth pick was Florida State small forward Patrick Williams, and Chicago Bulls selected him.

The draft was held via video calls and conducted at the ESPN headquarters in Connecticut. Initially scheduled for June 25, the draft was shifted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020-2021 NBA season will tip-off on December 22 with a 72-game format and a play-in tournament to decide 7th and 8th seed teams for each conference.

This means the playoffs will end on July 22, just days before the rescheduled Tokyo summer Olympics.

Clashing with the Olympics is one of the things that the NBA Board of Governors put into consideration when meeting for the tip-off date and format for the new season was decided.

Miami Heat lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals last season.
