Phoenix Suns Overcome Nuggets in Denver, Eyeing Playoff Stability

    March 29, 2024

In a pivotal clash that could well dictate the Western Conference playoff landscape, the Phoenix Suns secured a crucial 104-97 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night. This win, marking their second in Denver this month, not only highlights the Suns’ stature but also intensifies the race for playoff positioning as the regular season winds down.

Kevin Durant amassed 30 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks in a performance that once again highlighted his crucial role in the Suns’ aspirations.
His contribution, alongside a concerted team effort, propelled Phoenix to a win that helps them in their quest to avoid the play-in game by securing a direct spot in the playoffs.

Currently, the Suns are a half-game ahead of Sacramento for the seventh spot in the Western Conference, with their sights set on overtaking Dallas for the sixth position.

The victory was particularly sweet for Phoenix, coming off a disappointing road loss to the San Antonio Spurs, a game they played without the emerging star, Victor Wembanyama. Durant emphasized the importance of not letting the loss in San Antonio affect their morale and performance. “I’m glad we didn’t let that San Antonio game bleed over to the next game,” Durant remarked.

The Nuggets, leading the Western Conference, felt the absence of starting point guard Jamal Murray, sidelined for his third straight game with a sprained left ankle. The impact of his absence was palpable, as Denver struggled to find their rhythm against a determined Suns outfit. Nikola Jokic, battling lower back pain and left hip soreness, still managed to contribute 22 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists, showcasing his resilience and skill despite physical discomfort.

A significant factor in the Suns’ victory was their proficiency from beyond the arc, sinking 16 of 33 attempts from three-point range, contrasting sharply with Denver’s 10 of 40. This sharpshooting, particularly noted in performances from Bradley Beal and others, was pivotal in establishing and then extending the Suns’ lead, especially during critical junctures of the game.

Despite the Nuggets’ attempts to bridge the gap, Phoenix’s consistent performance and execution kept them at bay, ensuring the Suns maintained a comfortable lead through to the final whistle. Denver coach Michael Malone acknowledged his team’s effort but conceded that improved execution and shooting accuracy could have altered the outcome.

The Suns’ win in Denver is more than just another regular-season victory; it’s a statement of intent. As Coach Frank Vogel pointed out, the focus and intensity displayed against the defending champions reflect Phoenix’s readiness to compete at the highest level, regardless of the opponent.
