Why not me? You took care of Klay, you took care of Steph – Keith Smith feels Draymond Green will want maximum extension

    August 1, 2022

NBA analyst Keith Smith believes Draymond Green will want maximum contract extension with Golden State Warriors. According to recent reports in the Atheletic, Draymond Green claimed that he is expecting the maximum contract extension from the Warriors.

Green is available for extension on August 3 and he is hopeful to making more money now. Smith reckons Green will want to be treated as the same way as Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, who are currently the top two highest paid players at the Dubs.

“I think this is Draymond basically kind of saying, ‘Hey, I’m extension eligible… take care of me. Why not me? You took care of Steph, you took care of Klay when they were free agents,’” Smith said.

Meanwhile, Green is a vital cog in GSW’s team and he plays a key role in the defensive unit.

In fact, Green still has two years left in his contract and he will be paid $25.8 million next season. However, his contract has a player option for 2023-24 edition, which gives him a freedom to terminate the deal and he could become a free agent early.

The four-time All Star is in line for a four-year extension that could pay him around $138.4 million. The new contract will keep Green at GSW for another five years and he is expected to earn $164.2 million, around $33 million per season.

On the other hand, Smith believes GSW will find themselves in a spot of bother if they decided to keep both Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole.

“If they were to max out Wiggins and then give Poole anything close to the max, they’d be over half a billion dollars into salary, plus taxes, plus penalties,” the NBA analyst revealed.

“I think we’re seeing some things start to come to a head a little bit for the Warriors,” Keith Smith said. “We saw that with losing Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II in free agency,” Smith said. “Joe Lacob has already come out and said, ‘Yeah, I don’t know if we can keep both Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole.’”
