Deontay Wilder offered an excuse for why Tyson Fury defeated him so easily in their second fight last Saturday in Las Vegas.
“He didn’t hurt me at all, but the simple fact is my uniform was way too heavy for me. I didn’t have no legs from the beginning of the fight… I didn’t think it was going to be that heavy. It weighed 40lbs with the helmet and all the batteries.” Wilder told Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports last Monday.
Wilder’s entrance was indeed epic, he wore the suit to honor Black History Month but it clearly ended up being too heavy. As epic as the entrance was and even if it was indeed heavy, his excuse for losing the fight to Fury was more epic.
Wilder will exercise his rematch clause for a third fight against Fury. One problem he will encounter before the fight is that Fury dominated him from start to finish last Saturday and if the fight takes place soon, is very difficult to imagine what he can do to bridge that gap between both fighters in a short period of time.
Deontay Wilder has 30 days to invoke the rematch clause in his contract. Once the third fight takes place, Wilder will definitely not be wearing a similar heavy costume. He will still have an elaborate entrance, possibly with people carrying him like Fury did but Wilder learned his lesson and he will focus more on improving his preparations, although as mentioned above, considering how Fury dominated is difficult to see how he can beat him.
