With just a few days to his bout against Derek Chisora, WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury has said that he would fight once a month next year to make a total of 12 by the end of the year. According to him, he would start a “bum-a-month challenge” and tour the world looking for opponents to beat every month. He also said that it is very unlikely that his fight against Oleksandr Usyk would hold as planned.
Speaking with SkySports, the 34-year-old boxer said that he was going to have a talk with his promoter, Frank Warren, to see how they could bring the idea to life: “I think I would like to do 12 fights next year, do like a bum-a-month campaign all over the world.
“I am going to sit down with Frank Warren after this fight and see what we can do, see if we can do a bum-a-month campaign and go to random places and fight someone.
“Go to India, go to China, go to Australia, go to Indonesia, go to Africa, just fight local people.
“You have a heavyweight guy there? Yeah, let’s fight him.”
Twelve fights a year, albeit against mostly unranked fighters, is quite a big deal. At this point, it may no longer be about the money or the title for Fury, but for the rush that comes with being in the ring. He recently said that he had tried retiring but realized that kind of life was not for him. He said: “I was at home. I did everything I wanted to do. I wanted to spend some time with my family. I wanted to be that father. The kids, the school runs and all that, the dog, I wanted to do all that sort of stuff.
“Then I realized that’s for normal people, and I’m anything but a normal person. I’m like an abnormal alien. I only thrive when I’m in training camp for a fight.”
What this means is that we will continue to see Fury for a very long time and that he may even continue to fight exhibition matches after his official retirement, just like Floyd Mayweather.
For now, he would have to prove himself by defending his title against Chisora this Saturday.
