Shoulder Injury Forces Cancellation Of Whyte vs. Wallin

    October 22, 2021

Dillian Whyte’s second fixture of the year against Otto Wallin has been called off after Whyte suffered a shoulder injury. The injury happened a while ago but has recently proven to be a serious issue for the British boxer as the pain got worse on Monday. This was what brought the right to a forced cancellation as Whyte was advised to withdraw. The fight was meant to hold on October 30.

Whyte, who won the WBC interim heavyweight title after defeating Alexander Povetkin back in March, expressed his frustration at not continuing with the fight as planned. “I am devastated as I had a great camp, was in great shape, and had great sparring,” said Whyte. “I was looking forward to knocking Wallin out and would have done so in the first half of the fight,” boasted Whyte.

Whyte is the mandatory challenger of WBC champion, Tyson Fury, who won the belt after defeating Deontay Wilder back in 2020. Commenting on the issue, Wallin’s promoter, Dmitriy Salita, has said that the fight should not be cancelled but rescheduled so that Wallin would get the chance to face Whyte at a later date. He also suggested that the winner of the fight should move on to face Fury. According to him, anything else other than that “would be unfair to the sport of boxing, and unfair to Otto Wallin.”

The rest of the fights for October 30 would still go on as planned while the possibility of a new date for Whyte vs. Wallin is still under consideration. For now, there is nothing to even suggest that both fighters would meet on another date. Although Wallin’s promoter, Salita has said that they would petition the WBC for a decision about rescheduling the fight.
