Taylor v Serrano Fight To Hold In May

    March 7, 2020

It is not often that the boxing world gets to witness fights between two women of supposed equal strength, that is why there is so much anticipation regarding the fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano slated to hold on the 2nd of May as it appears on the bill of the Whyte v Povetkin fight taking place in Manchester. A fight Taylor’s promoter, Eddie Hearn describes as “the biggest women’s fight of all time”.

For years, there had been plans to see the two women square off, but it had never been a reality. It was in 2018 that Serrano’s side finally made plans to have the fight set in 2020. The two women hold impressive records and it very difficult to tell, at this point, who is more favoured.

Serrano, who has won 38 of her 40 fights, 28 of them by KO. She goes into her May 2nd fixture with a 24-fight streak. She scored her earliest pro victories in 2011 when she won the NABF Featherweight belt. She has won titles in all seven divisions. She currently holds the WBO and WBC interim featherweight titles.

An Olympic gold medalist, Taylor holds a career record of 15 fights, winning all. She holds the WBA lightweight title, which she would put at stake when she faces Serrano.

Her fight with Delfine Persoon in June 2019 crowned her as the undisputed queen of the lightweight division as she had all the titles, winning the ones previously held by Persoon. By the end of the year, she claimed another title in the junior welterweight division after defeating Christina Linardatou for the WBO title.

Speaking on the fixture, Serrano expressed her delight in the fight finally happening, although adding it would have made more sense if the fight was the main event.

Refusing to talk down Taylor, the Puerto Rican is looking forward to getting into the ring with her opponent. Taylor also expressed the same joy at the possibility of the fight finally happening, seeing it as something she has trained for since the start of the year.
