Frank Warren, Tyson Fury’s promoter, insisted that a potential unification fight against Anthony Joshua ‘has to happen’ this year. Fury destroyed Deontay Wilder and stopped him in the seventh round of their fight last month in Las Vegas to become WBC heavyweight champion.
While Fury has one of the heavyweight belts, the other four belong to Joshua. After suffering a shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr. via TKO in the seventh round on June 1 at Madison Square Garde in New York, he reclaimed his belts by beating the Mexican-American on December 7 in Saudi Arabia.
Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn, talked about the chances of Joshua fighting Fury in 2020. This is what he told BT Boxing: “It’s got to happen and it’s got to happen this year. To get that fight on, everybody involved has got to sit around a table and get it hammered out. It will happen providing Kubrat Pulev doesn’t knock out or stop Joshua.
You make AJ favorite [against Pulev] but in his last few fights he’s been caught. Everyone fighting him now knows what they need to do to win.”
Then Hearn was asked about whether he thought the fight can happen before the end of the year and he responded:
“Of course I’m optimistic, providing everyone keeps winning. But it will only get done if everyone sits down and makes it happen. Those two fighting will be the biggest sporting ever this country has seen since England won the World Cup.”
Hearn concluded by saying that he would like to see the fight be held in the UK. He also added that it depends on the money.
