Adam Lallana has put pen to paper, extending his deal with the Merseyside club till the end of the current English Premier League season.
Lallana who joined the Reds from Southampton in 2014 and has played 128 times for the club, scoring 18 times, but his only goal this season was in the 1-1 draw at Manchester United in October 2019.
Initially, the England midfielder was expected to leave the club at the end of the season on free as his deal expires on the 30th of June.
The player spoke about his delight to complete the season with the club.
“I am really pleased to have the chance to finish this season – it means a lot to me and my family. I feel in my time at Liverpool I’ve always looked to do the right thing for the team, the manager and the club in every decision I’ve made. I think this one fits into that category as well, so I’m buzzing to be seeing out this campaign and hopefully get to celebrate something memorable with an amazing group of people.” Lallana was quoted on BBC.
Liverpool sits on top of the 2019-20 English Premier League table with 25 points away from the nearest challenger as they close in on the title, the first win in 30 years.
Matches will return on the 17th oh June after it was postponed in March. Liverpool will play its first on the 21st of June against Merseyside rivals Everton, and the final away game will be at Newcastle on the 26th of July.
Furthermore, 36-year-old backup goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has signed a similar extension even though he has yet to make an appearance this season.
Liverpool are poised to win the EPL this season, but they have since been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League.
