A first-half goal rush from Arsenal was enough to see them get all three points against a demotivated Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening after a 3-1 win against their London rival, who are now 9 games without a win and on a seven-game losing streak.
The Gunners need all the wins they can get as they continue to chase a fading Premier League title Manchester City still has the advantage with two games in hand.
Mikel Arteta’s team dominated the whole of the first half, with Martin Odegaard getting the first of his brace in the 18th minute while doubling Arsenal’s lead after 31 minutes of play.
The hosts could have scored more if they were more clinical and direct but still managed to score his third through Gabriel Jesus eleven minutes before halftime.
The second half was a better performance from Chelsea as they pushed Arsenal back, but their consolation goal will only come from Noni Madueke after 65 minutes.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will remain at the top of the table for at least 24 hours before Manchester City play West Ham United at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. A win for City would return them to the top of the table at the expense of the Gunners, who have played two games more.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta stated that he was excited and delighted with the way his team performed in the first hour of the game, which was everything he wanted to see in his team.
“The first 60 minutes, I thought the team played really well, we need to be us, and that was everything I want to see from our team. With speed, quality, movement, and two beautiful goals, we connected with our crowd and created an incredible atmosphere. They have been incredibly supportive of what we have done, and we wanted to earn the right to be top of the league. We are, and happy to be there.” He said.
