Athletic Club and Atletico Madrid secure crucial away wins

    August 30, 2022

Athletic Club continued their unbeaten start to the 2022/2023 La Liga season when they faced Cadiz away from home on Monday evening in the La Liga with a resounding 4-0 win.

Bilbao was held to a goalless draw in their first game against Mallorca before beating Valencia by a single goal the previous weekend. The visitors were victorious on their last visit to the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla in April with a 3-2 victory.

Inaki Williams gave Bilbao the lead in the first half, 24 minutes into the game, and could have made it a brace ten minutes later, although he missed the penalty.

The 28-year-old who is set to feature for Ghana at the World Cup was substituted in the 54th for Gorka Guruzeta, and the 25-year-old scored two minutes after his introduction.

Oihan Sancet thought he had scored his first goal of the season, but his 65th-minute effort was disallowed by the VAR.

Alex Berenguer was able to make it 3-0 before Guruzeta completed the rout in the stoppage time. The victory keeps Bilbao in 5th, level on points with Barcelona and Villareal and two behind Real Madrid as well as Betis, who both have perfect records in the La Liga this season.

Cadiz remains rooted at the bottom of the league with 0 points, and 0 goals scored this season, and they will hope to change those statistics against Celta Vigo on the second of September.

Similarly, Bilbao will face Espanyol at San Mames stadium.

Meanwhile, at the Mestalla, Valencia lost to Atletico Madrid by a lone goal. Valencia was hoping for their second victory of the season, but they were only able to make it two losses in two games.

The Bats had beaten Girona in their opening game before losing to Bilbao in their second match. The tide looked like it will change when American midfielder Yunus Musah scored in the first half, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Antoine Griezmann got the winning goal in the 66th minute of the game to return Atletico to winning ways after losing to Villareal 2-0 at the Metropolitano stadium last time out.
