Barcelona ends La Liga season with loss to Villarreal

    May 23, 2022

Barcelona has ended their 2021/2022 La Liga season on a losing note after they were beaten 2-0 at Comp Nou on Sunday.

Barcelona lost 2-0 to the Yellow Submarines at Camp Nou with UEFA Champions League football assured already.

Barcelona started the season slowly with Dutch manager Ronald Koeman in charge after a terrible run of form that saw them in the bottom half of the table and getting knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in November.

The Blaugrana let go of the former Southampton manager and hired the club legend Xavi who took over and changed the team’s fortunes.

All these happened with significant winter transfer business by Barcelona, including getting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal, Adama Traore from Wolves, and Eric Garcia from Manchester City.

While there are rivals, Real Madrid had won the league title with a few matches left to spare Barcelona secured second place ahead of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

Alfonso Pedraza gave the visitors the lead with four minutes of the first have left to play, while Moi Gomez doubled their lead ten minutes after the break.

However, no goals were added to the scoreline by the hosts despite Barcelona fielding Ferran Torres, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, and Adama Traore.
The result means that Xavi’s side finished second with 73 points which is 13 points behind the champions.

In third place is Atletico Madrid, who defeated Real Sociedad on the final day 2-1 at San Sebastian. After a goalless first half, Diego Simeone’s side took the lead through Rodrigo De Paul after just five minutes from the restart.

Angel Correa made it a comfortable lead in the 68th minute, while Jon Guridi pulled a consolation goal deep into stoppage time.

Sevilla finished fourth despite their 1-0 win over Atletico Bilbao. Meanwhile, Cadiz’s 1-0 win at Alaves and Granada’s 0-0 draw at home means that Granada joined Levante and Alaves as the three teams relegated from the top flight.
