Canada lose 1-0 to Belgium in their World Cup opener

    November 24, 2022

Belgium did the needful in getting maximum points against a wasteful Canada in their opening match at the Qatar 2022 World Cup Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was unbelievable when a young Canadian squad had the most opportunities and chances inside the Belgium half; they failed to take advantage.

Roberto Martinez’s men will be thanking their stars for not concerning against their opponents, that eventually lost steam, and the game became scrappy towards the end.

With the loss, Canada failed to win any of their four games played at the World Cup. In their last outing 36 years ago, they were beaten by their opponents.

Belgium now tops Group F with the maximum points.

As there had been some shocking results at the tournament, many had expected Canada to follow suit with Alphonso, who lost an 11th-minute penalty,  inspiring them but later lost steam.

Kevin De Bruyne, who has been the major creator n the team, also failed to sparkle, as the tiring season seems obvious in his game.

Canada recorded  23 shots – 14 more than Belgium – but none found a way past Thibaut Courtois.

Belgium were disjointed and sluggish for much of the night, but they breached the Canadian defense just before half-time. A long pass from Toby Alderweireld found Michy Batshuayi, who rifled home with his left foot.

With this, Canada are still looking for their first-ever World Cup goal. They have shown that they have what it takes to score goals.

As things stand, Canada will break that record in this tournament but may not qualify for the next round.

The first match set and done, Belgium will be looking at securing the best round ticket from the games.

Since Les Rouges were much more active inside the opposition penalty area, one won’t be surprised to see them score their first world cup goal soon.
