Chelsea are keen to bolster their backline and therefore according to reports on The Athletic the Blues are interested in signing Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Sule who joined Bayern Munich in 2017 from Hoffenheim is uncertain about his future at the Allianz Arena and now with Hansi Flick tipped to depart from Bavaria, Sule may also look at his options at hand. The German was roped in by Bayern after some stellar performances for his boyhood club Hoffenheim and while he has been a crucial member of the team through these years the only criticism that the supporters have with him is his fitness. The 25-year-old often gets injured and misses crucial matches and it also hinders his progress as a defender.
Sule who is predominantly a centre back can also feature as a right-back especially because of his blistering speed. It is often hard to believe that a player of his build is so fast and that allows Flick to play a high line knowing that Sule will catch up with the opposition forwards.
The Germany international is set to enter the final year of his contract with Bayern and talks of discussing a contract extension is yet to take place. The Bayern management are currently busy resolving the issue at hand with manager Hansi Flick who in all possibilities will leave at the end of this season. So a decision on the new manager is the first and foremost priority for the board and hence the extensions of the players will happen later.
It is understood that Chelsea have been keeping an eye on Sule for some time now and with the contract situation at the moment makes him a very exciting prospect. While Chelsea have defenders like Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, Fikayo Tomori, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma, some of them may leave Stamford Bridge making space for Sule. Tomori who is out on loan may be permanently sold to AC Milan and Silva and Azpilicueta are not getting any younger and therefore the move for Sule makes a lot of sense.
Apart from the German defender, the Blues have also made Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane their target. So it will be interesting to see which of these two lands in West London this summer.
