Debutant Longstaff put United to the sword

    October 6, 2019

Manchester United’s terrible run in the English Premier League continued on Sunday after Newcastle’s debutant Matthew Longstaff scored a long-range effort to give Newcastle a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils at the St James’s Park.

Longstaff, who was playing beside his brother in the team’s midfield, enjoyed a dream Premier League debut with a low long-range finish that beat David De Gea in goal for United, capping an impressive display on the evening.

He’s goal, however, pulled Newcastle out of the Premier League relegation zone up to 16th on the log just one point behind United who are now in 12th position. The 19-year-old had hit in the bar in the first half of the game, but he never made a mistake with his late strike in the second half.

The win brought relief and joy to Newcastle fans, but it also showed United’s shambolic performance for the umpteenth time this season under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjear, as they sit in unfamiliar territory in the bottom half of the table.

Furthermore, United struggle for goals once again and have now only found the back of the net nine times in 8 games with five of the nine goals scored on the opening day defeat of Chelsea

United looked clueless when it comes to creating goal-scoring chances all through the game with Harry Maguire wasting the side’s best chance of the game just before half time.

Newcastle: Dubravka, Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Clark, Willems, M Longstaff, S Longstaff, Saint-Maxim, Almiron, Joelinton

Subs: Darlow, Krafth, Dummett, Shelvey, Atsu, Gayle, Carroll

Man Utd: De Gea, Dalot, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young, Fred, McTominay, Pereira, Mata, James, Rashford

Subs: Romero, Rojo, Williams, Matic, Gomes, Chong, Greenwood

Manchester United will need to get back on track with a win against Liverpool in their next game. United are set at 4.20 to win, while Liverpool are fancied at 1.86.
