Depay criticises Lyon’s mentality over underwhelming Ligue 1 start

    November 10, 2020

Despite not being in the European competition, Lyon has been having underwhelming performance in the domestic league.

Lyon struggled to a 2-1 win against Saint-Etienne on Sunday. This is believed to have lifted at the mood of gloom at the Groupama Stadium as they head into the international break.

He is now urging his teammate to be prepared to fight for the Ligue 1 title as they currently occupy the fifth spot with 17 points. Two points separate the Les Gones from Rennes that is occupying the second spot while PSG leads the log with 24 points.

The criticism of the team is coming from Depay after Lyon was tipped to put in a strong title challenge in 2020-21. The prediction was based on the fact that they had an impressive outing in last season’s Champions League and they currently have no European commitment.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019/20 season of Ligue one was ended, and the final standing was decided on a match per point basis, making Lyon finish 7th.

Having made it to the last four in Europe’s elite competition last season before losing 3-0 to Bayern Munich, Lyon have been struggling to build on that platform this season.

This has left them seven points behind reigning champions after just ten fixtures – all thanks to Tino Kadewere a brace on Sunday that sealed a crucial victory for Luis Garcia.

Expressing his frustration over the team’s lack of consistency before the derby clash, the Netherland international urged his team-mates to be more responsible, which is the pressure that comes with playing for one top European clubs.

Speaking with Telefoot, the winger said fighting for the Ligue 1 title should be the team’s goal.

Lyon will resume domestic action after the international break with a trip to Anger on Sunday, November 22.
