Giorgio Chiellini lifted the European Championship on Sunday at Wembley after Italy defeated England on penalties. The veteran defender has been one of the best players in his position over the last decade and finally got his hands on an international trophy was had eluded him for so many years.
The victory was a special moment for Chiellini and Bonucci who were a part of the Italian defence that shipped 4 goals in the final of the 2012 Euro tournament. Both centre backs enjoyed a fruitful tournament and were worthy winners in the final. Prior to the match, Chiellini was put on the spot for a few words about Harry Kane.
Giorgio Chiellini’s counterpart in terms of leadership in that England team was Harry Kane and they had a good battle during the game as well. Chiellini spoke about the Tottenham striker with great respect. He also revealed that he had previously asked Juventus to sign the striker.
Harry Kane was quiet during the start of the tournament but was getting into his groove as the knockout games ensued. It was imperative to keep the striker at bay and that’s exactly what Girogio Chiellini did. Harry Kane had limited touches in the box and didn’t trouble the goalkeeper.
He also revealed that he spoke to Fabio Paratici before now and urged the then Juventus director to complete the transfer of Kane.
The defender said in a press conference as quoted by Football Italia: “I still remember the first time I played against Kane, a friendly in Turin between Italy and England, and I was immediately impressed by his many different qualities.
“He’s good in the air, holding up the ball, with assists, scoring goals, even free kicks, so you can ask (former Juventus director Fabio) Paratici how many times I talked to him about Kane over the years!”
Kane has asked Tottenham to sell him this summer and Juventus wants a new striker. However, his price is probably far too much for Juventus to even contemplate.
