Kevin De Bruyne’s availability at the Euro 2020 tournament is still unclear after the Belgian midfielder suffered facial fractures against Chelsea in the final of the 2020-21 Champions League final. Kevin De Bruyne suffered double heart break on Saturday as his side not only lost the match, but he came off second best in a 50-50 with Antonio Rudiger.
Kevin De Bruyne was immediately taken off as he broke his nose and eye socket during the coming together. This news wasn’t well received by Belgian coach Roberto Martinez who will be anxious about his midfield maestro’s well-being.
“I would say that until next week we won’t know exactly where we are with Kevin. Now, allow him now to relax.
“He could be available for the Euros but when, we don’t know at the moment. It’s too early to give you an answer now, we must first get the green light from the medical side.”
Kevin De Bruyne was given a slight break after the Champions League final due to a lengthy club campaign with the Premier League champions and was supposed to join up with the around 10th June. But due to the injury, his participation is in doubt.
“He’s still recovering after a very difficult season in terms of the number of games at club level. But every day is important and we are in contact with him daily,” Martinez said of his star performer.
A similar situation surrounds the Belgian captain Eden Hazard. His injury issues have been well documented in the last 2 years and he might miss the first warm up game for the Three Lions.
“Greece will be a fantastic game for us in terms of being a competitive clash. They will test us on how we can play our high-pressure game. They are also a very good defensive side so we want to assess partnerships up front,” added Martinez.
“You never really kick on in your preparations until you get into a match scenario. Pity we don’t have fans behind us but we’ll try to use the game as well as we can.”
