Following Everton’s 1-0 loss at Goodison Park vs relegated Sheffield United, Carlo Ancelotti explicitly expressed his concern for the side’s play at home. This was their ninth home league defeat of this Premier League season.
Everton has lost home matches to the likes of Newcastle, Fulham, Burnley, and now Sheffield United since Christmas 2020.
Everton failed to capitalize on a chance to move in line with Tottenham for the No. 6 spot.
“With this defeat, we’ve lost the opportunity to fight with more possibility of being in Europe next season,” Everton boss, Ancelotti, said. “We lost a great opportunity; our chances are less now than before. We have two games left to play; we need to see which position we are in at the end.”
Daniel Jebbison, at just 17-years-old in his first career Premier League start, attacked early (7’) and became the PL’s youngest-ever goal scorer ever. He was on loan at National League North side Chorley earlier this season.
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity that the club has given to me,” Jebbison said after the match. “Can’t really describe the feeling when I scored. It’s amazing.”
“It’s really difficult to explain what is going on here at home; we’ve lost a lot of games, all the same kind of games,” Ancelotti added.
Everton dominated possession 63-37, and had twice as many shots on target as did Sheffield.
“I have to take the responsibility of this, I hope the players also take the responsibility,” Ancelotti said. “I am really embarrassed.”
Everton wrap up the current Premier League campaign this Wednesday, 19 May vs Wolverhampton before a season-ending clash Sunday, 23 May vs Manchester City.
