‘FC Barcelona was clinically dead when I joined office’ – says President Joan Laporta

FC Barcelona have been struggling with financial issues since a few years and their newly elected president Joan Laporta recently spoke about the condition of the club and how they are managing to fight it. It is not a secret anymore that the Catalans are in massive debt which forced them to not renew Lionel Messi’s contract as the Argentinian magician joined Paris Saint Germain. The condition off the field affected the condition on the field as well as they struggled to get going and get the results which were expected.

But with Joan Laporta’s arrival, things started to change as he brought back Xavi Hernandez this time as a the head coach and made some shrewd free transfers. While the club is looking in better shape now, the debts are still there and they are fighting with them in different ways.

In his recent revelation to the Barcelona Senate, Laporta opened up as he said, “When we arrived the club was clinically dead, now we are in the ICU”, explained the Barça president, referring to the improvement of the club despite remaining in a desperate situation.

He shared how a meeting will be called soon to discuss these matters. He also reminisced how the club was in tatters financially and they were clinically dead. “Next Thursday the 16th we have called an assembly to seek solutions in order to straighten out the club’s economy, which is very delicate. When we took office, not even payroll could be paid and we had a sword above us. We were clinically dead,” Laporta added.

Things have changed since his arrival as Xavi led Barcelona to a second placed finish from complete disarray. He is trying to build a team that can challenge Real Madrid for the title atleast in the La Liga. The Catalans also got knocked out of the Champions League and had to play the Europa League where again they lost out in the quarterfinals against eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt.

While they look to build a team that will justify the name of the lcub they are lucky that even after so much that has happened players want to feature for the Blaugrana. According to reports Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has shown keen interest in joining FC Barcelona whereas some other players are also joining the club and will hope that they can take this team forward with collective effort.
