Former Bayern Munich and Brazil international Ze Roberto feels that Cristiano Ronaldo could be in the final few years of his illustrious career. He highlighted how things have not been smooth sailing for the Portuguese icon and considering how much he enjoys winning silverware this is a difficult phase for him at Old Trafford.
He feels that back to back rough seasons at Juventus and Manchester United may force him to hang his boots earlier than expected. The 47-year-old recently shared his thoughts on Ronaldo to Sky Sports. He said, “Cristiano is, for me, a machine. But I don’t think he will still be going at 40 because he is a player who has always played at the highest level, always winning trophies and always trying to be the best player in the world. But in the last two years, we have seen he has not been able to do that with Juventus and now with Manchester United.”
Ze Roberto highlights how Cristiano Ronaldo does not compete for the best individual prizes anymore among the current best players in the world. He also feels that one day Ronaldo will feel of stopping rather than trying to achieve something that will never be the same as what he has already achieved.
“The best proof of that is that he hasn’t been among the top two or three players for the big individual prizes. He is still a player who costs a lot, but as someone who is used to competing at such a high level, there will come a time when he decides it is better to stop rather than look for something that won’t be the same,” Ze Roberto explained.
Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United last summer from Juventus after falling out of favour in Turin. However, his return to Old Trafford has not been that great. He had a tremendous start to his second stint in United colours but soon the goals stopped coming and he rather looked uninvolved in United’s overall gameplay. He has found the net only once in the last 10 matches for the Red Devils this season across all competitions.
He currently has a contract running till 2022-23 season and there are reports that if United fail to reach the Champions League this season then he may leave the club. But for now, the Red Devils are in the top four and are looking to finish there.
