Former footballer Michael Owen hails Gabriel Martinelli’s mindset in Arsenal’s win over Crystal Palace

    March 20, 2023

Michael Owen has been a huge fan of Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli who has been instrumental in the Gunner’s success especially in the Premier League. However recently the North London outfit were eliminated from the Europa League after losing to Sporting CP on penalties.

Unfortunately it was Martinelli who missed the kick from the spot and as a result Arsenal lost the shootout and bowed out of the round of the 16 in the Europa League, leaving their fans disheartened in yet another European competition.

However Mikel Arteta’s men reacted really well as they bounced back with a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace. Martinelli opened the scoring for the Gunners courtesy of an assist from Bukayo Saka. This was the Brazilian 13th Premier League goal and he is fifth in the list of top goalscorers this season.

Owen was really impressed with how Martinelli has bounced back after what could have been a very deflating experience for any footballer and especially a youngster of his age.Hence he hailed his performance against Crystal Palace.

“This is a great goal,” Owen told Premier League Productions (via HITC). “I think that’s such a good finish. I like this lad (Martinelli). It’s one way to bounce back (after his penalty miss against Sporting).”

Martinelli is someone who is known for his pace and exceptional close control. His ability to control the ball even when he is dashing makes him special. Owen was really impressed with that and feels that the Brazilian is an explosive player.

“This is an unbelievable finish. The finish was beautiful. I love how he takes two quick touches in succession. He is almost at full speed within two or three strides. He’s a very quick and explosive player,” Owen added.

Arsenal opened the scoring in the game via Martinelli in the 28th minute. Bukayo Saka scored one in each half whereas Granit Xhaka’s 55th minute goal was sandwiched in between as the leaders simply brush aside Crystal Palace. Only Jeffrey Schlupp scored for the visitors which resulted in mere consolation.

This win helps Arteta’s men to take an eight point lead at the top of the Premier League over Manchester City, who however have a game in hand. With just 10 games left, the Gunners are in the race to win their first league title in 19 years.
