Manchester United are gradually making the moves in the transfer market. They have tied down a deal with Tyrell Malacia and now they have an agreement with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. However former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is not much impressed with United signing the former Inter Milan midfield maestro.
Murphy shared that he is a great fan of the former Tottenham and Brentford star but he understands that Eriksen will not be a regular at Old Trafford given the options that are available to manager Erik ten Hag. He highlighted how Eriksen is a squad player as United already have Bruno Fernandes in that position.
Recently speaking to talkSPORT, Dan Murphy shared his point of view, he said, “It’s a difficult one because I really like Eriksen. I’ve always admired him in terms of his creativity and the way he’s free with his football and tries things. Would it excite me if I was a United fan? He’s going to be a squad player, isn’t he? He’s not going to play instead of [Bruno] Fernandes. He’s a welcome addition to any squad because he has experience and he has quality.”
Murphy then went on asking the right questions as he shared how Bruno Fernandes is already a great pick in that position and with Eriksen’s signing things become slightly complicated for United. The Dane cannot play as a holding midfielder so he will have to fight for a spot against Bruno. Therefore Murphy feels Ten Hag will go with the Portuguese international in important matches.
“You can’t play him and Fernandes. He’s a number 10 or a number 8. [Paul] Pogba and Fernandes played together on occasion, but not very often and that’s why United were so easy to play against at times,” Murphy added.
Eriksen has gone through a lot in the last couple of years and has shown great amount of determination and grit to make a comeback as a footballer and also a better person. His life changed when he suffered cardiac arrest back in 2020 during the Euros. However he braved every difficulty to be back on the pitch. He enjoyed a great six month stint with Brentford and many people believe that it was for him that they stayed in the Premier League. Although he scored a goal and came up with four assists in 11 games, his presence in the middle was a game changer for the Brentford players.
He will look to carry that form over to Old Trafford as he understands the competition that he will have to face every week to get on the starting eleven and leave his mark under Erik ten Hag.
