Former Manchester United centre back Gary Neville is hopeful that Liverpool and Chelsea can still chase down Manchester City in the Premier League title race. The former United defender feels that Liverpool and Chelsea have it in them to take down Pep Guardiola’s men as he hopes that these two clubs keep on piling the pressure on the Citizens.
Neville believes that it is a three horse race for the Premier League title despite City’s comfortable nine point lead in the title race over the Reds.
Manchester City recently dropped points as they could only draw 1-1 against Southampton in their latest Premier League clash. But both Chelsea and Liverpool closed down the Citizens with convincing wins to gain some ground.
It has not been easy for Liverpool to keep up the form despite not having star players like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane as both of them are featuring for their nation at the Africa Cup of Nations. Therefore players like Diogo Jota, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takuma Minamino have filled the void decently by scoring some crucial goals.
Speaking on his podcast, Neville said, “It can happen. Liverpool have got it in them if they can keep that strongest XI together. Get Mane and Salah back flying. Liverpool are doing really well without two of their main players. They are [in the title race]. Little things like that give a bit of encouragement, with Southampton getting a point against City.”
Neville tagged Manchester City as a machine but also stated how Chelse and Liverpool must believe that City will make mistakes and they will get a look in the Premier League title challenge.
“City, they’re a machine, you don’t expect them to make a lot of mistakes but they could and Liverpool and the Blues have got to believe that,” Neville opined.
Neville also went on to add how he expects Chelsea to do better with their exceptional squad. He highlights how Liverpool are doing really well despite not having a team at par with Machester City or Chelsea. But he feels that the blues have a very strong unit and it should be closer than how it currently is in the points table.
Chelsea recently defeated London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur in their latest Premier League clash as Hakim Ziyech scored a world-class goal followed by Thiago Silva who also got into the scoresheet.
