Paris Saint-Germain recently broke out the news of signing a new contract with Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. which is a huge feat. However former France international David Ginola feels that the Brazilian’s deal holds little to no meaning if the Parisians fail to convince Kylian Mbappe. Ginola also believes that Neymar is way past his best years.
The former FC Barcelona man who penned a four year deal with the club from Paris is all set to lead the team to greatness. The deal also has an option of increasing it by another year. While Ginola is happy that the Brazilian has pledged his future at the club, he feels that Mbappe has more potential to unlock and keeping him at Paris will be a huge deal.
“The important thing to win trophies is stability in a group. To gain Neymar’s loyalty even more, I think that’s a very good thing,’ the former PSG playmaker told France Info. “Winning matches with one player today like back then, you could do with [Michel] Platini and [Diego] Maradona, I think those days are over.
“We cannot sign Neymar again without securing the signature of Kylian Mbappe. Neymar is 29 years old, his best years are behind him,” Ginola continued.
“Mbappe is more about youth, talent in its raw state, he is a boy who has enormous potential, but we are only at 60% of his capacities. Except that today, all these players will have to realise that they can not win anything if they do not put themselves at the service of a group,” he opined.
It has not been the best year for Neymar in terms of fitness and that has had a direct implication on his form which has also been very inconsistent. The Brazilian has missed as many as 19 games this season and has netted 16 goals and 10 assists. However, Mbappe has had a bigger impact this season with 37 goals across all competitions.
Mbappe is also approaching the final year of his contract with PSG and clubs like Real Madrid and Liverpool waiting to take their chances. However, PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has assured that the club are doing their best to keep the Frenchman in Paris beyond next season.
