Chelsea have been very active in the transfer market but they have not signed anyone for sometime now. They desperately need some reinforcement but most of their targets have been picked up by FC Barcelona. After losing out on Jules Kounde to the Catalans,Chelsea have turned their eye towards Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana.
Recently former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent shared his opinion on the current transfer market where he took a harsh dig at Manchester United and also touched upon Chelsea’s defensive targets. The Blues are linked with players like Denzel Dumfries, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella.
Bent argued on whether it is alright to invest £80 million on Fofana and £50 million on Cucurella from the Chelsea point of view. On this topic talkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein raised the question whether it is good or bad for the Blues. “Fofana £80m, Cucurella £50m. £130m for those two for Chelsea, is that a little bit too much?”
After hearing the question Bent immediately shared how United spent big money on Harry Maguire and feels that is the yardstick for other defenders. “Manchester United paid £80m for Harry Maguire,” Bent replied.
While Goldstein shared how Maguire cannot be the yardstick everytime, Bent shared how Fofana is better than Maguire in comparison to their time at Leicester City and feels that the young defender will be worth the money. “Fofana is better than Harry Maguire when Harry was at Leicester. I can understand, because they are buying potential,” Bent added.
Apart from Fofana, Chelsea are also looking at Brighton and Hove Albion fullback Marc Cucurella as they look to reinforce their fullback options and feel that the Manchester City target can be the best option for Thomas Tuchel’s system. While Pep Guardiola and the Cityzens have backed off a bit after hearing Brighton’s huge asking fee, Chelsea are the frontrunners to secure the deal for the Spaniard who will not come cheap for them.
The Blues till now have made some good signings as they secured the services of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City whereas Kalidou Koulibaly has joined from Napoli to fill up the void left by Antonio Rudiger. They have also snapped up high potential goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina from the Major League Soccer outfit, Chicago Fire. But they are still in search for a couple of signings as many players have already left them in this window with players like Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta also heading towards the exit.
