Erling Haaland scored a brace while Phil Foden added another as Manchester City won the Manchester derby with a 3-0 win on Sunday night to move into third position with 24 points behind Tottenham and Arsenal in first and second position.
Pep Guardiola’s side went into the international break losing 1-0 to Arsenal and needed to return to winning ways before they fell further behind the top two. They won their first game after the international break against Brighton in a 2-1 win while beating Young Boys 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League in the midweek.
Manchester City needed to win on Saturday; this was even after the Gunners won their Premier League game against Sheffield United on Saturday in a 5-0 victory.
For Manchester United, they won 2-1 against Sheffield United while beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League at the midweek. The Red Devils fell behind in the 26th minute as Erling Haaland scored from the penalty spot.
The Norwegian striker scored five minutes after the break to double the visitors’ lead, while Phil Foden sealed the win with an 89th-minute strike as Manchester City jumped back to third position with 24 points leveled with second-placed Arsenal.
However, they remain two points behind league leaders Tottenham while Manchester United remain in eighth position with 15 points in 10th position. Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag said his team played their first half well but that the penalty changed the game.
“I think in the first half we played very well. The game plan was what we wanted, and we defended very well, closing spaces and keeping them away from the goal. There was one big save from Andre, but we had opportunities from two or three big breaks. We need to take benefit from it. We have to take more. The penalty changes the game. I don’t have a comment on it.” Ten Hag said.
