Harry Kane says Tottenham need to make a fast start this season if they want to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for Premier League honours.
The captain scored twice on Saturday as his side came from behind to overcome Aston Villa 3-1 in their season opener. Next up is a trip to face Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Spurs looked on course to battle with Manchester City and Liverpool last season before they fell away at the turn of the year and Kane is determined to push them further in this campaign. With last season’s top two having set a relentless pace in the second half of last season, Kane accepts they cannot be allowed to pull away early on.
“We kept up with them for a while last year but they blew ahead after January,” Kane said. “We have to make sure we get off to a good start. “Liverpool set the standard on Friday night and City before us, so it’s important that we stay in touch as long as we can.
“We have full belief that we can go all the way but there’s a long road ahead and we’ve got to be fully focused.” Kane was delighted with the two goals and believes he is in good shape to have another strong season after a much-needed summer break.
“I had four weeks off, the most I’ve had off in a few years now. I’ve had a good pre-season, been here from the start, worked with the team and everyone’s feeling good,” he added.
Spurs are 17.00 to win the Premier League, with Man City 1.40 and Liverpool 3.80.
