Barcelona veteran Gerard Pique was all in tears while giving an emotional retirement speech after playing his swansong at Camp Nou. Pique had announced last Thursday that he would be calling it time on his glorious career at the club.
Pique joined Blaugrana back in 2008 from Manchester United and since then he has been a vital part of the club over the years. The Spaniard also played a key role in the success of the team.
The 35-year-old was able to end his career on a high as Barcelona defeated Almeria by 2-0 at Camp Nou on Saturday.
The defender played for 83 minutes and made his 616th appearance for the Spanish giants.
He gave his gratitude to his teammates and coaching staff, who supported him throughout his illustrious career.
As quoted by Sport, Pique said: “First of all, thanks to all my teammates, coaching staff, club employees… to everyone who makes the day-to-day at the club easier.”
“Thanks to the board of directors for all these years. In life, as you grow older, sometimes to love is to let go [starts crying]…”
“A relationship of so much love, so much passion, I think it is the moment to give ourselves some space.”
The defender added he will be back at the Catalan club to make a contribution in the future.
“That is why I think it is the right moment to go, because I love this club. I am convinced that I will be back in the future. This is not a goodbye, I left when I was 17 and I came back.”
“My grandad made me a member when I was born. I was born here and I will die here.”
Barcelona will next take on Osasuna in the LA Liga on Tuesday.
