Legendary Lionel Messi has revealed he would announce his retirement at the right time but he won’t think about age. Messi, 36, is still going strongly at the top level and has performed consistently for both club and country.
Messi took Argentina to glory in the FIFA World Cup 2022 and played a key role in the success of his team. Last year, Messi made a move to Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer after spending two years with Paris Saint Germain.
Messi had a great run in FIFA World Cup 2022, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. He also scored a goal and provided an assist in the all-important semi-final against Croatia. Messi then scored a brace against France in the final and took his team to glory.
Speaking on the Big Time Podcast, Messi said, “I am very self-critical of myself, I know when I’m good, when I’m bad, when I play well and when I play badly. When I feel its time to take that step, I will take it without thinking about age.”
“I know that moment I feel I’m no longer ready to perform, that I am no longer enjoying myself or helping my teammates.”
Meanwhile, Messi revealed he wasn’t ready to leave Barcelona in 2021 but the Catalan club had to let him go because of LA Liga financial regulations. The Argentine had an amazing run with the Spanish giants, scoring 672 goals and providing 303 assists in 778 matches for the club.
“I thought I would stay in Barcelona. I was not ready to rebuild my life and move my family from this place….. my wife and children.”
Messi will be in action for Inter Miami CF when they take on New York City on Saturday.
