Inter Miami and Lionel Messi Gear Up for Leagues Cup Showdown Against Tigres and Puebla

    February 1, 2024

Major League Soccer (MLS) announced on Wednesday that Inter Miami, led by the legendary Lionel Messi, will clash with Mexican powerhouses Tigres and Puebla in the upcoming season’s Leagues Cup. This tournament, known for its dynamic and competitive nature, unites all 47 top-flight teams from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX in a thrilling showcase of North American soccer talent.

Inter Miami, the defending champions, have set high expectations following their triumphant run last year. With Messi at the helm, the team clinched victory over Nashville in the previous tournament’s final, marking the club’s first significant triumph since signing the Argentine World Cup winner. This victory not only bolstered the team’s confidence but also reaffirmed Messi’s unparalleled impact on the field.

While the exact dates and venues remain under wraps, the tournament is scheduled to kick off on July 26, with the final set for August 25. In a unique twist, this year’s edition will be hosted solely in the United States and Canada, requiring the Mexican clubs to play away games. However, to mitigate travel strain, four Liga MX teams, including Tigres, will play their “home” games at a designated “hub” in the U.S.

The tournament structure involves 15 groups of three, with MLS champions Columbus Crew and Liga MX winners Club America automatically advancing to the next round. The top two teams from each group will move on to the intense knockout stage, comprising 32 teams. Additionally, the draw aims to reduce travel demands by grouping teams from the East and West coasts together.

Aside from the much-anticipated matchups involving Inter Miami, other notable games include the 2022 MLS champions Los Angeles FC facing Club Tijuana and Vancouver Whitecaps in West 7. Mexican international Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is set for an emotional return against his former club, Los Angeles Galaxy, in a group that also features the San Jose Earthquakes.

CONCACAF Champions League victors Club Leon are pitted against the Portland Timbers and Colorado Rapids. Meanwhile, in the East, Pachuca will compete against New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC.

This year’s Leagues Cup promises widespread coverage, with all games being broadcast globally on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass. Selected games will also be available on networks in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, ensuring fans across North America and beyond can enjoy this soccer extravaganza.

As teams gear up for what promises to be a captivating tournament, eyes will undoubtedly be on Messi and Inter Miami, as they strive to defend their title and add another chapter to their burgeoning legacy in the competitive world of North American soccer.
