English Premier League champions Liverpool were made to fight hard to get a win against Chelsea at the Anfield stadium on Wednesday evening as both sides scored eight goals between them.
Chasing a UEFA Champions League spot, Chelsea needed a win to be certain of their place in the competition next season, but they started the game from the back foot as Naby Keita put Liverpool in the lead with a spectacular effort in the 23rd minute.
Youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold doubled Liverpool’s lead some minutes later with a well-curled free-kick while Wijnaldum made it 3 two minutes before half time.
French striker, Olivier Giroud, pulled one back for Frank Lampard’s men on the stroke of half time. Roberto Firmino scored his first Anfield goal since April on the 55th minute before the introduction of Christian Pulisic turned the tide of the game a bit.
The American midfielder created the assist for Tammy Abraham’s goal on the hour mark before scoring a goal of his own 13 minutes later. Former Arsenal striker, Alex Oxlade chamberlain killed off any hopes of a come back on the night that Jurgen Klopp’s side were presented with the English Premier League trophy after a 30-year wait.
The result meant Chelsea are in 4th with 63 points level on points with Manchester United in third but with an inferior goal difference to that of the Red Devils while Leicester City are one point less in fifth with the final round of match left to be played on Sunday.
Chelsea will welcome tough opponents Wolves to the Stamford Bridge with no option than to win, albeit a draw may be enough should Leicester fail to get the point against Manchester United at home at the king power stadium.
Manchester United had earlier drew against West Ham United on Wednesday, and they must avoid defeat and hope Chelsea fails to beat Wolves if they are to be guaranteed a UEFA Champions League spot.
