Manchester United’s current woes have fans and pundits alike scratching their heads. Erik ten Hag, who took the reins as manager after a successful tenure at Ajax, enjoyed a promising start to his Manchester United career. However, this season, things have taken a dramatic turn for the worse. Reports of unrest in the dressing room and a string of disappointing results have left Ten Hag fighting to keep his job. Interestingly, former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal had foreseen some of the issues Ten Hag would face when he took the job.
Manchester United’s performance this season has been nothing short of a disappointment. They’ve experienced their worst start to a campaign since 1962, leaving them languishing in eighth place in the Premier League. In the Champions League, they find themselves in third place in their group. Adding to their woes, they’ve already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup. The weight of these struggles has left Erik ten Hag teetering on the brink as rumors of a divided dressing room and potential managerial replacements swirl.
Louis van Gaal, who served as Manchester United manager from 2014 to 2016, was well aware of the challenges that lay ahead for any United manager. In a piece of advice he offered to Ten Hag prior to his Manchester United appointment, Van Gaal cautioned that the club was a “commercial club.” He suggested that Ten Hag might be better off at a “football club” instead.
Van Gaal’s remark appears to allude to a perception that Manchester United’s focus on commercial success could sometimes overshadow the club’s on-field performance and success. This perception has persisted for some time, particularly under the ownership of the Glazers. None of the managers who have taken the reins following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013 have been able to replicate his era of triumph.
Erik ten Hag decided to disregard Van Gaal’s advice and accepted the Manchester United job. Now, he’s in the thick of a tumultuous season, grappling with criticism and a team that’s struggling to find its form. Despite the challenges, Ten Hag remains determined to lead Manchester United out of this rough patch.
Acknowledging the team’s poor performance, he expressed his commitment to turning things around. He assured supporters, “I’m a fighter, and I know it’s not always going up.” While United’s current situation is far from ideal, Ten Hag takes responsibility for it and vows to put things right.
As Ten Hag works to steer Manchester United back on course, the club’s fate remains uncertain, and only time will tell if they can overcome their current challenges.
