Manchester City effectively secured their progress into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after beating Sporting Lisbon 5-0 in Portugal on Tuesday evening.
Bernardo Silva scored a brace while Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, and Riyadh Mahrez also got on the scoresheet in Lisbon in a totally dominant display by last season’s finalists.
Already Manchester City have been dominant in the Premier League, after taking 43 points out of a possible 45 while also leading the Premier League table with nine points and looks set to win the fourth Premier League title in five seasons as well.
The Premier League champions could have completed the treble last season, but they were beaten by Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League title. Pep Guardiola’s side beat RB Leipzig, PSG, and Club Brugge to the top spot in the group stage and were already ahead in the seventh minute, although a long VAR check was required.
Bernardo Silva added one more ten minutes later, then Phil Foden scored in the 32nd minute, before Silva scored his tenth goal of the season in all competitions with a 44th-minute strike.
Raheem Sterling had a hattrick at the weekend at the Carrow Road against Norwich City, and he managed to score once in this game with his 53rd-minute goal. Bernardo Silva had a third goal cancelled by the VAR.
Manchester City will play against Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton in the Premier League, Peterborough in the FA Cup. Then will play in the Manchester derby on the sixth of March before the second leg of the game on the ninth of March.
Meanwhile, in Paris, Kylian Mbappe showed Real Madrid what they are missing and a glimpse of what they will be getting in the summer when he scored the winning goal in the final minute of stoppage time as PSG beat Real Madrid.
Former Barcelona forward Lionel Messi also lost a penalty in the game, an incident that PSG will hope doesn’t hurt them in the second leg as there is no away goal rule this season.
