Manchester City played better than us and deserved to win: Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti after 4-0 UCL semifinal loss

    May 19, 2023

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted that Manchester City played better than them and deserved to win after their 4-0 loss in the UEFA Champions second-leg semifinal at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

The Los Blancos were thoroughly dominated by the Cityzens as the home team was ruthless in their game. City’s midfielder Bernardo Silva scored a brace in the first half to put his team in front after Erling Haaland was kept in check by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Manuel Akanji scored in the 76th minute and then Julian Alvarez scored in the stoppage time to give a thumping victory to his team. The hosts kept the pressure on Real Madrid throughout the match and also had 60% of the possession.

“They played better than us and deserved to win,” Ancelotti told reporters as quoted by Reuters.

“They put a lot of pressure at the beginning, it worked out well for them because they made it very difficult for us to get the ball in play and they went two goals ahead.”

“From then on, it was difficult to get back into the game. We tried in the second half… but it didn’t work out.”

The Italian admitted that this loss hurts a lot but also feels it makes no sense to evaluate what went wrong against the Sky Blues.

“Evaluating today, at this moment, makes no sense,” Ancelotti said.

“It is a defeat that hurts, it hurts a lot. But it can happen. We reached the semi-finals of the Champions League against a strong opponent, they played better and left us without a final. We have to learn and for the next season, to be better.”

Manchester City was at their absolute best against Real Madrid and the team played collectively to put the visitors on the back foot. The UCL final will be played between Manchester City and Inter Milan on June 10th as the former chase their maiden European title.
