Manchester United legend Roy Keane points out major problems in midfield after 2-1 defeat against Brighton

    August 8, 2022

Manchester United’s tough time continued as their start of a new era began with a 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the first game of a new season in the Premier League. Nothing was right for the Red Devils as Brighton despite losing their best players like Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma were cruising to victory.

After watching the match, former Manchester United star Roy Keane was frustrated and very disappointed with the lacklustre performance that his former team put up at the start of a new season.

Recently speaking to Sky Sports, Keane shared his opinions on Fred and Scott Mctominay manning the Manchester United midfield. He shared how these two players are not good enough for the stature of Manchester United and annoyed with how they do not have the decision making and footballing intelligence to play for such a club.

“Big, big problems at United. The decision-making and the football intelligence, in particular from Fred – and I’ve said this for a long time – Fred and McTominay are not good enough. They won’t get Manchester United back competing at the top,” he told Sky Sports.

Kean then highlighted how United and their new manager Ten Hag was slow to react. He even pointed out Christian Eriksen’s role and how he did well on debut. “We see it week in, week out. [They are] not up to it. They had to gamble in the second half and Eriksen is probably in his best position when he drops back and he’s picking up people, but [that decision comes] too little too late,’ Keane added.

Keane’s concerns are similar to what the fans have been telling for the last couple of years. Also they were proven right in the first half into a new season. Thankfully McTominay’s poor outing came to an end when he was replaced by Donny van de Beek. But sadly it was not enough to impact the result of the game.
