Manchester United legend and present-day Derby boss Wayne Rooney revealed how he has been telling his office staff for the past one month that the Red Devils have a real chance of winning this Premier League season and his happiness knew no bounds when they returned to the top of the table on Wednesday with their 2-1 win over Fulham.
It was Paul Pogba’s long-range effort that have Manchester United the winning goal late into the second half. The Red Devils are now placed at the top of the table with 40 points, which is two-points clear off Manchester City and Leicester City who are occupying the second and third places respectively.
Manchester United last won the title in 2013 but Rooney thinks that the arrival of players like Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani has really helped the side this time. According to him, they have brought the winning mentality back at the club and have also helped Pogba with the freedom to play his natural game.
“The last few years, Manchester United haven’t been ready to challenge for the title, but now they’ve brought in players like Fernandes and Cavani – players with a winning mentality – that has helped massively,” said Rooney ahead of this weekend’s Sky Bet Championship match at QPR.
“And now the squad is challenging for a Premier League title. I said to the coaches in the office here six weeks ago that I thought Manchester United will win the League. I still feel that today.
“Paul Pogba will have a massive part to play in that. Those players that have been brought in with winning mentalities will relieve some of the pressure from Paul a bit, and he can now show his quality on the pitch.”
Manchester United will play Sheffield United next in the Premier League on January 28. Sheffield are placed right at the bottom of the Premier League table at the moment. Facing the Red Devils won’t be an easy task for them once again. Considering the form Manchester United are in, this should be another easy victory for them.
