As Lionel Messi begins a chapter in his football career with France club PSG Saint-Germain, he has his eye set on winning another title of the Champions League. Messi, who is regarded as one of the best footballers of his generation, has signed a much-awaited two year contract with the club and he was presented to the PSG fans on Wednesday.
Messi won a total of four Champions League titles with his former club Barcelona and he would want to repeat the same success with PSG. The star striker will get a handsome salary of Euro 25m every year excluding tax.
“My goal and my dream is to win the Champions League once more. I think we have the team to do it here,” said Messi in a press conference at Parc des Princes, where he was unveiled as PSG’s new signing for two years with an extension option for another year.
It has been an emotional week not only for Messi but also for the footballing world as the star striker was expected to sign a new contract with Barcelona but couldn’t complete the deal due to LA Liga regulations.
“My exit from Barca was very hard after so many years. Everything that happened to me in the last week was hard and fast too. It was emotional, changed from one day to the next, so many feelings. Nobody can be prepared for that. I cannot forget what I lived and experienced in Barcelona. But I am excited about this new stage for my career and my family,” said Messi.
Meanwhile, Messi will join his former Barcelona teammate Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe, who is well known for his speed. The Argentine is hopeful of bringing success to the team while playing with the two big strikers.
“I am very happy. To play alongside them (Mbappe and Neymar) in attack is crazy. I’m really excited to get started. Neymar and I know each other very well. I hope we will be stronger together and with all our teammates. This was already a very complete team and they have added great signings this summer.”
