The French champions, Paris Saint-Germane have revealed that Neymar has suffered ligament damage after spraining his ankle.
The club said the Brazilian is expected to be out of action for between six and eight weeks.
The French giant will be providing a further update on the Brazil forward’s injury later this week
Neymar suffered the injury and was stretched off the pitch five minutes from normal time during Sunday’s 3-1 win over St Etienne in a Ligue 1 clash at the Geoffroy Guichard Stadium.
The 29-year-old Brazilian rolled his ankle under a challenge from a St Etienne defender and couldn’t finish the game.
According to the club statement, examinations were carried out on Sunday night which confirmed that Neymar Jr suffered from a sprained left ankle with ligament damage.
This means that Neymar will likely return to action at the beginning of February. It therefore means that he will be available for the beginning of the Champions League knockout stages. PSG had already qualified as runners-up in Group A behind Manchester City.
The latest update expected in the next 72 hours could change the situation that could make Neymar return to action earlier than speculated.
In their latest win, Lionel Messi set up all three goals as Paris that stretched their Ligue 1 lead to 14 points after going behind.
As Timothee Kolodziejczak got the marching order on the stroke of halftime, PSG went on a rampage in the closing stages. Messi provided assist for Marquinhos’ two headed goals and Angel Di Maria struck to seal a clinical turnaround. Les Verts had opened the scoring through Denis Bouanga for the hosts.
PSG is now on 40 points from 15 games.
St Etienne on the other hand are now bottom of the standings with 12 points.
PSG is expected to cope with the absence of Neymar, as Mauricio Pochettimo can rely on Angel Di Maria, Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
