Ralf Rangnick was supposed to lead Manchester United to better results and have them compete for some Silverware this season.
But the interim manager of the Red Devils has failed to meet all the proposed objectives.
Manchester United’s elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid is Rangnick’s latest setback spell at the helm of the club.
Upon assuming command of the club, Rangnick said, “All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfill their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team.” But over the last few months, there have been many rumors about players’ discontent with Rangnick.
In fact, much has been reported about the poor relationship between Rangnick and Ronaldo, which has caused a split in the club’s locker room.
Although in the Premier League, the club has improved its performance compared to what was shown in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s last days. The club is out of qualification for the Champions League and risks being left out of the competition next season.
Given this scenario, Rangnick has failed to meet the objectives that he had set for this season.
Red Devils legend Paul Scholes has been a harsh critic of Rangnick from the start, and in a recent interview, the former player named those he considers the best candidates to lead the club.
“I would have gone for Conte or Tuchel,” Scholes told BT Sport. “It looks like one might be available at the end of the season. Those are two top-class coaches that strike fear into players and win, which is the most important thing,
“United, with either one of those managers, would be much better off. I think they’re an elite coach away from challenging for trophies again. They’ve got a good squad with some top players, but for the last three or four years, they’ve not had an elite coach.”
Rangnick remains in interim charge until the end of the season and is expected to remain at the club in a consultancy role when a new head coach is identified and appointed.
