Real Madrid Madrid caught up with rivals Atletico Madrid at the top of the La Liga table with a 2-0 victory over Granada on Wednesday evening.
Karim Benzema and Casemiro scored as Zinedine Zidane’s men got their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions.
After a goalless first half, Casemiro scored Real Madrid first goal in the 57 minutes just before the hour-mark as Zidane’s men took control of the game.
Granada had before the game been unbeaten in their last five matches winning three matches and drawing the other two out of their last five and they showed the same form in the first half as they denied Real Madrid scoring opportunites.
Guilty of missing scoring chances themselves, Real Madrid took the lead in the 57th minute when Casemiro headed in a cross to give Madrid a 1-0 lead.
The second goal would come in the final minutes of the game as Karim Benzema once again put his name on the scoresheet to make the score 2-0, his sixth goal in five matches.
Despite the win Real Madrid are still second behind Atletico on goal difference and their rivals led by Diego simeone has played only 13 games, two lesser than Real Madrid has played.
The duo’s closest rivals, Real Sociedad, are now six points away from both teams at the top despite having played 16 matches so far this season.
Barcelona on the other hand, despite their 3-0 win on Tuesday over Real Valladolid, are in fifth with 24 points and they are 8 points adrift of the league leaders.
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid defender Kieran Trippier has been fined £70,000 and a 10-week worldwide football ban after a panel found he broke betting rules.
The former Tottenham defender was charged for seven offence which happened in 2019, four of them were proven despite his denial of all allegations.
The 30-year-old who joined the current La Liga leaders in July 2019, will miss 12 matches for Diego Simeone’s side. His return is likely on March 2021 for the Madrid Derby on the 7th of March.
