Second-half rage sees Liverpool beat Newcastle United to go top of EPL table

    January 3, 2024

Mohammed Salah scored a brace while Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo ended up on the score sheet as Liverpool secured a 4-2 win over Newcastle United in a second half that saw six goals scored.

Liverpool should have seen the game off in the first 45 minutes but Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez missed a lot of chances, Mohammed Salah was not innocent as well as he missed a penalty and also missed other chances that should have seen Liverpool going to the half-time break with the lead.

In the Egyptian’s defense, he had a goal disallowed for offside, while Newcastle United fell victim in the same circumstance as both teams went into the break level.

However, in his last game for the Reds before traveling for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Mohammed scored the opener and his first goal of the night just four minutes into the second half.

Eddie Howe’s side equalized five minutes later through Alexander Isak, Curtis Jones, and Coady Gakpo, took the game beyond the Toon army in the 74th and 78th minute while Sven Botman got one more consolation for the visitors.

The win put Jurgen Klopp’s side effectively top of the Premier League table with three points clear of second-placed Aston Villa. Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe tagged the game action-packed.

“A lot happened. Action-packed game. We’re disappointed with the way we defended. I didn’t think the second one was a penalty. And I did think Sean Longstaff’s one before that was. It shouldn’t be given. Martin has pulled his hand away. He’s had two steps before going down. For me, it’s not a penalty. Even the first one, the contact was so minimal. We feel hard done by. The players gave everything. I back the quality of the group. In time, we’ll get the results we need.” Eddie Howe said.
