The Premier League has already confirmed the 20 teams participating in the 2020-21 season, with Fulham being the last confirmed after winning the Championship final at Brentford.
These 20 teams will meet this week with the Premier’s directors to determine how the next seasons will be played. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Premier League and all other competitions to stop its activity in March. After several months of debate and analysis of different proposals to return to sports activity, the Premier League managed to play the 92 games pending in June and July.
The Championship also managed to complete the tournament safely. In the case of League One and Two, the teams’ positions were determined by points-per-game average, and only the playoffs were played.
As reported by BBC Sport, the teams will meet to determine how the 2020-21 season will be played and which of the current measures will be maintained for the next season.
Some of the points to be discussed at the meeting are:
How to proceed in case of a shortened season
When all sports activities stopped, no one knew how to proceed, and there was nothing written in the rulebook. The Premier wants to have a framework in place if something like this happens again.
New rules on how to award points and determine final positions if a league cannot be completed will be added to the rulebook.
The Use of Five Substitutes
This measure was implemented temporarily for the restart of the season and aimed to preserve the players’ physical condition. Some teams want to keep this rule at least until next season, although others have already spoken in favor of returning to just three substitutions.
The Start Date of the Season
The new season of the Premier is scheduled to start on September 12. But the clubs that participate in European competitions such as the Champions League or the Europa League want the date to be changed to give them more time to rest and prepare in case they reach the finals of these European tournaments.
