German forward Timo Werner scored his first Premier League goal in over 100 days as Chelsea defeated Newcastle 2-0 on Monday at the Stamford Bridge.
Although Werner scored in Chelsea’s 4-0 thrashing of Morecambe in the FA Cup in January, the former RB Leipzig striker’s last goal in the league, came against Burnley at the Turf Moor last October in a game that Chelsea won 3-0.
His first goal in 15 games came in the 39th minute, eight minutes after Olivier Giroud gave the Blues the lead.
The French striker was a replacement for Tammy Abraham who was substituted on the 20th-minute mark after picking up an injury.
Tammy Abraham’s injury gives Thomas Tuchel a growing injury list as he joins Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva on the injury list ahead of Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid next Tuesday.
Before the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clashes, Chelsea will face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday at the Saint Mary’s Stadium.
Meanwhile, the win puts Chelsea in fourth with 42 points level with West Ham but with a superior goals difference which puts them above the Hammers.
It is the Blues’ fifth consecutive victory under manager Thomas Tuchel who joined the blues in January.
Earlier on Monday, West Ham defeated Sheffield United 3-0 to move above Liverpool on the table.
A first-half penalty from Declan Rice as well as goals from Issa Diop and a late stoppage time from substitute Ryan Fredericks in the second half was all the Hammers needed.
The win puts West Ham in the fifth position with 42 points from 24 matches played. It means they are now two points ahead of Liverpool that sits in the sixth position after another loss to Leicester City at the weekend.
