Tottenham sacks interim manager Ryan Mason to take over

    April 25, 2023

Tottenham has relieved Christian Stellini of his duty as the club’s interim manager after just four games in charge. This is coming after Sunday’s 6-1 drubbing in the hands of Newcastle United at St James’s Park.

Spurs were already 5-0 down in the first 21 minutes of the game and eventually lost 6-1 to worsen their chances of making the UEFA Champions League next season. They currently sit in fifth behind Newcastle United and Manchester United in third and fourth, respectively, and have played two games more than their European hopefuls.

Stellini had only taken charge of four games after replacing Antonio Conte, the man he stood in for when the Italian had a health problem. He got three wins from four games to earn the trust of Daniel Levy to take charge after Conte, but he only won once, drew once, and lost twice, forcing Levy to thank Stellini after taking a difficult decision to sack him with the devastating result from Sunday.

“It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened, and while myself, the board, the coaches, and the players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately, the responsibility is mine. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season, and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time,” said Levy.

31-year-old Ryan Mason, who is also a former player with Tottenham, will carry on for the remaining eight games in the Premier League, starting with Thursday’s fixture against Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Premier League games will return on Tuesday with Wolves hosting Crystal Palace at Molineux stadium while Fulham will travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa, relegation strugglers Leeds United and Leicester City will also fight for points at Elland Road.
