Former Manchester United forward, Wayne Rooney feels that his former teammates Cristiano Ronaldo won’t join Manchester City, despite the reports saying otherwise.
Rooney and Ronaldo have guided Manchester United to three Premier League titles and the Englishman believes that the Juventus star won’t take this step. However reports suggest that the Portuguese talisman is not happy in Turin and is pushing to move out of the club this summer.
Manchester City are also in a very interesting situation after Harry Kane decided to stay at Spurs. The Citizens need a forward, one who can replace their record goalscorer, Sergio Aguero. Considering the current market, Ronaldo is their best bet. City are on the verge of offering a two-year deal but they are in no mood to pay a transfer fee for the 36-year-old. However, with his contract running till 2022, Bianconeri are in every right to ask for a transfer fee.
Rooney feels that Ronaldo has too big a legacy at Old Trafford to join their arch-rivals. He also gave the examples of Andy Cole and Peter Schmeichel who represented both the Manchester club but feels that Ronaldo is very different from them. Lastly, he believes that a move to Paris Saint Germain will be a more logical move for the Portugal international.
“I think Cristiano has got a very good legacy at Manchester United and I know how proud he is as a player and a person,” Rooney told talkSPORT.
“I can’t see [him joining City], but it’s football so you never know. There have been a few that have done it but no one at Cristiano’s level. Obviously Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole, but I just can’t see that as an option for him really.
“Financially of course he doesn’t need to do it. I think it’s more likely that it’s PSG he goes to.”
Ronaldo left United in 2009 and it has been over a decade since he last wore that jersey but fans still consider him an icon of this club. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still considered a club legend for his contribution and impact on the clubs and their fans. However, a move to arch-rivals Manchester City will undo everything that is left of him at the Theatre of dreams.
