Australia took a giant step towards qualifications for the World Cup in Qatar after a late win over the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday evening.
A late deflected Ajdin Hrustic’s volley in the 84th minute sealed the vital points for the Socceroos.
The game kicked off as Australia looked to secure their fifth consecutive World cup finals, and it didn’t take too long before they made their claim as Jackson Irvine put his side ahead in the 53rd minute following a beautiful strike.
However, the host replied in the 57th minute to draw level through a Caio Canedo strike as they looked to pull an upset.
Following the leveller, Australia switched the gear and took control of the game, and turned on the heat as chances went begging to be converted.
With six minutes to go, the Socceroos were awarded a corner taken by Aaron Mooy as he found the onrushing Hrustic, whose strike with the help of a Salmeen block went past the helpless Khaled Issa to make it 2-1
Australia defended and thwarted every threat to stand firm to record a hard-fought 2-1 win.
Australia manager Graham Arnold after the game, expressed his excitement over the win, revealing how important it was to secure progress to the final qualification fixture.
“This is a very important win for the team. I am so happy, and I must commend the boys for working hard to make sure we leave with all three points.”
“We believe the job isn’t done yet as we still have to face Peru and win the spot for Qatar.” I also want to thank the fans, they’ve been amazing tonight, and we dedicate this win to them,” he added.
The Socceroos will now face Peru in the coming week to battle for a spot at November’s showpiece event.
