It seems like the idea of a new golf league might be coming to reality at last as the Saudi-backed golf Super League is set to commence in June with a tournament at the Centurion Club in St Albans, England. Eight tournaments have been announced, and they would take place in Europe, America, and Asia. The league would run from June to October 2022.
The first tournament, which would begin on June 9, just a week before the US Open, has a prize purse of $25 million while whole schedule, which is being called the LIV Golf Invitational, has a total prize fund of $250 million.
According to the league commissioner, Greg Norman, invitations have been sent out to players and it is expected that there would be some interest in the coming months. But with the PGA Tour threatening to ban players who join the new league, it is unlikely that there would be interests from major players, especially in its first year.
But Norman believes that the LIV Golf Invitational is not a threat to the PGA Tour and that players can play in both leagues if they choose: “Our events are truly additive to the world of golf. We have done our best to create a schedule that allows players to play elsewhere, while still participating in our events.
“I believe players will increasingly make progress in achieving their right to play where they want. We will help in any way possible and will provide golfers with opportunities to achieve their full potential.
One of the players who was linked to join the new league, Henrik Stenson, has been made the captain of Team Europe for this year’s Ryder Cup. This would put to rest any motive he may have to join the new league if he had any at all.
It would be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. One can already tell that the new league is bringing a lot of money to the table and not all players would be able to resist the offer.
